Music For Strike & Repack

Great stuff I've been enjoying-

A lot of this stuff is very reminiscent of Squirrel Nut Zippers...

Pet Peeve - The National Anthem

Just watching the opening of the souper bowel- the girl doing the national anthem (Idina Manzel, who cannot, apparently, Let It Go) is destroying the pace and the rhythm of the song.

I've said this before- when a national anthem is played at a venue outside the US, everybody sings along...
Sadly, in the US, the typical singer massacres the song with flourishes, creative note, time and pitch change to the point that no one could possibly join in...
That, in my humble opinion, sucks.
Between that and people cheering in the middle of the song for obscure high notes and annoying howling, I've really started to dread how performers are going to destroy a very meaningful and historic song.

Sunday Music Interlude - Cold Chisel - Khe Sanh (1973)

The Australia Open Series - Sydney (a/k/a Apia International Sydney) is in the books-
The WTA winner was Petra Kvitova and on the ATP side Viktor Troicki won.
Huzzah.

Now for the last epic struggle-
We're in the midst of striking the site here at the Sydney Olympic Park.
One more day and I'll be on the big grey bird headed home.
This has been a long one here in Oz...
Fun?
Sometimes.
The staff and the folks I've met?
All just excellent people.

But...
Three years of missing out on the holidays back home is probably all I can stand.
As much as I like the people and the gig, It might take some serious coercion to get me back down here again.

...
And I've traveled round the world from year to year
And each one found me aimless, one more year the worse for wear
And I've been back to South East Asia
But the answer sure ain't there
But I'm drifting north, to check things out again

...
Well the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
Yeah the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
And it's really got me worried
I'm goin' nowhere and I'm in a hurry
And the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone

Stay tuned.

Musical Interlude - Sunday Symphonies

This version from a few months back was pretty good-

This one is pretty cool too-
It's want to say I like both of these better than the original, but AC/DC's version has a certain "angry old man" vibe that is quite enjoyable too.

Sunday Monday Music Interlude

Sorry- I was busy yesterday...

Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can't tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start

They tell me I'm too young to understand
They say I'm caught up in a dream
Well life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes
Well that's fine by me

So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost

I tried carrying the weight of the world
But I only have two hands
Hope I get the chance to travel the world
But I don't have any plans

Wish that I could stay forever this young
Not afraid to close my eyes
Life's a game made for everyone
And love is the prize

So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost

Didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know (didn't know, didn't know)

Sunday Gospel Brunch - Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings

There ain't no good chain gang.

('strewth!)

Bet it ain't raining back home
Bet you sister's still on the phone
Bet Momma's in the kitchen, cooking fried chicken
Wishing that I hadn't done wrong

Momma, don't you worry about it none though
Every thing's gonna be alright, Momma
They're teaching us a lot of new things in here, Momma

Things like there ain't no good in an evil-hearted woman
And I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James
And you don't go writing hot checks down in Mississippi
And there ain't no good chain gang

Papa's reading yesterday's mail
Wishing that the hay was all bailed
I bet he's wishing he could go fishing
And here I am a lazing in jail

Well, Papa, don't you worry about it none
Now, every thing's gonna be alright, Papa
They're teaching us a lesson today
We're learning pretty well too

We've already learned a whole lot of stuff already
Things like there ain't no good in an evil-hearted woman
And I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James
And you don't go writing hot checks down in Mississippi
And there ain't no good chain gang

There ain't no good in an evil-hearted woman
And I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James
And you don't go writing hot checks down in Mississippi
And there ain't no good chain gang

There ain't no good in an evil-hearted woman
And I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James
And you don't go writing hot checks down in Mississippi
And there ain't no good chain gang

There ain't no good in an evil-hearted woman
And I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James
And you don't go writing hot checks down in Mississippi
And there ain't no good chain gang

Sunday Musical

Caught this delightful ditty over the ending credits on the movie "Slither"...

Well you know I said I'd love you for all time.
Well sometimes I just can't believe you're mine.
But every now and then
I'm ready to say when
Oh, baby I love you, just leave me the fuck alone.

Well in your arms is where I'll always stay
But something deep inside says not today
Well I'll be sitting here
working on this beer
Oh baby I love you, just leave me the fuck alone.

I try so hard each day
To make things go away
There's nothing left to say for tonight

For a couple of days I won't be coming 'round
I'm going to go get lost, I think I might skip town
Now I don't mean to pout
But you plain wore me out
Oh baby I love you, just leave me the fuck alone.

Oh, baby I love you, just leave me the fuck alone

I tried dancing, I just want to go home
I know your cooking's great
But dinner will have to wait
Oh, baby I love you, just leave me the fuck alone

Well I'm in a frazzled state
The party will have to wait
Oh, baby I love you, just leave me the fuck alone.

Living My Life Like A Song - Part 1

There was a meme going around a while back... Basically it was "your history in music"...
It got me thinking about music I like, songs that have meaning for me, and ones that I put in my playlists for driving and working...

There seems to be a preponderance for Jimmy Buffett in my music library- growing up in the Keys you couldn't avoid him.
I even met him a couple times down in Key West just as his career was taking off- after Come Monday and just as Margaritaville was hitting the charts...
His politics are pitiful and his hypocrisy is rampant... Look up the lyrics to Makin' Music For Money, then listen to the way he slams cover bands, lyric sites, and  people who do one-off t-shirt designs for personal use. His lawyers hit them with both feet...
So... I'll do my best to avoid contributing to his causes and to his bottom line - (i.e. no concerts, no purchasing of CDs, etc) and I have nothing but contempt for so-called Parrotheads.

That being said- there is still quite a bit of Buffett on my iTunes library, and the songs evoke quite a bit of nostalgia.

So, to start the series off- From one of his earlier albums, Living and Dying in 3/4 Time- I had this 8-Track in the Burning Plymouth and it got a huge amount of play...
Pencil-Thin Mustache, Saxophones, and the Lord Buckley classic Gods Own Drunk...
But this one gave me food for thought, and made the Cafe Du Monde of the must-visit locations for my first visit to New Orleans years later...
...
Coffee is strong at the Cafe Du Monde
Donuts are too hot to touch
Just like a fool, when those sweet goodies cool
I eat 'til I eat way too much

'Cause I'm livin' on things that excite me
Be they pastries, lobsters or love,
I'm just tryin' to get by bein' quiet and shy
In a world full of pushin' and shove

And the Wino and I know the pain of back bustin'
Like the farmer knows the pain of his pickup truck rustin'
It's a strange situation, wild occupation
Just livin' my life like a song
The Wino and I Know - Jimmy Buffett

I have been living my life like a song...
Several songs, as this series will probably tell you...

Music Interlude
The Ghost of Stephen Foster

A tasty ditty from Squirrel Nut Zippers...

"Met the Ghost of Stephen Foster at the Hotel Paradise
This is what I told him as I gazed into his eyes:
Ships were made for sinking,
Whiskey made for drinking,
If we were made of cellophane, we'd all get stinking drunk quite faster."
